Projects/Production Centers:
1. Paper Pulp Manufacturing Plant.
The Plant provides mechanized facilities to manufacturers of paper pulp for use in paper machie craft. The new technology has considerably reduced the cost of manufacture of raw material ( paper pulp) for use in making various artifacts. As a result manufacturing cost of the products has reduced giving way to increased sale of paper machie items to the benefit of artisans.
2. Carpet Washing & Drying Unit:
Carpet weaving is the back bone of handicrafts industry of the state. Traditionally the washing and drying of carpets was carried on manually involving a lot of time and expenditure. By using the mechanized system of washing and drying of finished carpets, the expenditure has significantly been reduced and time involved in drying of carpets also reduced. The facility proves to be very beneficial for the artisans associated with the trade particularly during the winter season when the temperature normally goes below zero degree.
3. Walnut/Wood Seasoning Unit;
Seasoning is a basic requirement for the Walnut wood used in manufacture of different furniture items as it gives strength and durability to the furniture items. Seasoning has traditionally been carried out by manual process under which the wood has to be kept in lots for a specified period of time. Under the new technology the wood is seasoned by using electrically generated heat in huge chambers thus considerably reducing the time required for seasoning. The facility has to a large extent reduced cost of production of the furniture items to the ultimate benefit of the artisans engaged in manufacture of these items.
4. Kani Shawl Project;
The World famous Kani Shawls of Kashmir are traditionally woven by sticks. It takes months together for a weaver to prepare one Kani shawl. The Kani shawl project was initiated to introduce mechanized system of weaving in order to reduce the time in manufacture of the shawls. The project was started during the year 2004 and is expected to involve an expenditure of Rs. 300.00 lacs. Training has been given to two batches of Kani Shawl Weavers ( 20 weavers each) for use of jacquard machines in weaving process. Each batch is given training for a period of six months. Thereafter the weavers are provided assistance for setting up of their own production units.
